Sixty years ago the world was wrecked during a terrible war. The soil was poisoned. The air became toxic. Billions died. Those who survived took refuge in great towered cities, and began constructing giant colony ships that would enable them to escape the ruined Earth.

The work wasn’t completed in their lifetime. The seas rose to swamp the diseased land, and lap against the city walls. Their descendants laboured on, and now the first of the spaceships is nearing completion.

But these cities aren’t dictatorships. An election is scheduled to choose a leader for this last exodus of humanity. With twenty-four hours until voting is due to begin, two workers are murdered. It is the first serious crime in generations, and it is down to the young Constable Ely to solve it. The election must take place. The ships must be launched. Above all, production must come first. (54,000 words)

A dystopian detective novel from the author of Surviving The Evacuation 1 London, 2 Wasteland, 3 Family 4 Unsafe Haven, 5 Reunion, 6 Harvest, 7 Home, Zombies vs The Living Dead, Undead Britain, and History’s End.

So I saw the link to this in a free/discount book newsletter. I'd never heard of the author before. I was intrigued by the concept, but to be honest, I haven't had a ton of luck with many of these free books.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised!

Though it has a little bit of a slow start (mostly due to world building), it soon turns into an intelligent, exciting, and thoroughly unique SF/Detective mash up.

The main character, Constable Ely, starts out as a bit of a drone - he follows orders and does what he's told. But as you read, he becomes a likable and compelling character. Suddenly, I was deeply involved in his quest to solve the murders and saddened as he begins to realize that much of what he's been told about his world just may not be true.

The author does an excellent job of melding the SF with the detective mystery. It's really pretty seamless. It's detailed and thought provoking as it offers up some very interesting ethical considerations along with our murders.

While I started out a tenuous reader, I can tell you that I was soon racing through this book. I was disappointed when I had to stop to go to work and was thrilled when I was able to finish this up on my break.

I'll happily read the author again!

Work Rest Repeat Policing PostApocalyptic Britain eBook Frank Tayell Reviews

This is an example why I started enjoying SciFi books many years ago. A SciFi book can be about action, or drama, or mystery, or anything else, just the setting it is located in is not today's reality. In this book, which is a captivating detective story, we have an enclosed location, a limited amount of time and 2 murders (to start). Well written, several twists and an unexpected solution. ENJOY!
Unexpectedly good! One of the best books I rad in last 3 years. I like the writing style just enough sharp, short and precise. No unnecessary details. The plot is nice, though sometime a bitpredictable.
The only downside I'd mention is a bit unrealistic idea behind the motives of the whole society. I hardly believe this might work to keep the people to live under such conditions. (to make no spoilers I won't give more details).
But still, al in al l- very well!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded this book, but as I began to read, I'm glad I did. Frank Tayrell does a good job of mixing the sci-fi and mystery genres. "Work. Rest. Repeat" is a fast-paced drama that takes the reader into a post-apocalyptic future in which the populace must live much differently than previous generations yet face many of the same problems we do today. Fans of both genres mentioned will enjoy this book. - Sheila Rae Myers, Author
This was an entertaiining story! I do not know whether the author's intention was that it should be funny, but there were several parts that made me laugh out loud, as I interpreted it - at least the first half of a book - as a satire of similar science-fiction-stories. Still the end of the story surprised me.
This story is another of the many post-apocalyptic tower stories that for some reason, seem to all come from Britain. Many of the basics of the story follow the WOOL Universe model, but of course, there are some changes.

Ely is a Constable, one supposed to keep order in the tower. It seems, though, that he has far more of a follower personality than a leader. He gets browbeaten regularly by the Chancellor, mostly because she presents unreasonable demands on him, and manages to turn even his successes into failures. I really felt bad for Ely.

The detective portion of the novel is the investigation of a pair of murders, that seem to keep expanding into others dying. It is interesting, because Ely really has had no training for it; murder is essentially unheard of in the tower.

We learn about the history and the society of the tower while the investigation goes on, which helps keep the action moving. There is also a backdrop of an upcoming election for Councillors and the Chancellor position, which somehow, even Ely gets involved with.

I agree with many of the other reviewers in that the ending is a bit muddled and confusing, and to my mind, leaves some things unexplained. However, it is a definite twist, and no matter what you might think as you read, you probably won't be 100% right. I think it is a solid story, one that pulls you in, and at 166 pages, can be one evening's read. You may find it hard to pull away, especially in the final quarter or so of the story. I only put the rating down to four stars due to the confusion and lack of coherent direction in the ending. Other than that, this is an excellent story and well worth your time.
So... familiar themes to an old sci-fi nerd like me. Apocalypse, Earth all but destroyed, survivors band together, leave Earth for new world. Except... that isn't really what the story is about. It's about a man forced to alter his perspective so he can find truth. It's about a man who was so blinded by his vision of what should be that he couldn't see what was. It's about the truth found in lies and lies that just might be desirable to truth.
It's not an overly complicated story. The clues are there for the taking, but unless you've read certain other stories or watched shows like Black Mirror or Outer Limits, you won't piece it together before the reveal. I've read the stories and watched the episodes and still couldn't fit it all together on my own. I suspected the truth, but managed to get distracted by one of the lies.

4.5 stars. I really was entertained and I already have some folk in mind that I'll be recommending this story to. I don't know which came first, this story or a particular episode of Black mirror. Because my mind kept wandering back to the visuals from the TV, I found myself losing sight of the story I was actively reading.
