Chicago has many alleys to hide in. James is always looking up to the stars to find his love. Are they doomed? Do they have a chance? It's an urban fairy tale, punk Romeo meets complicated Juliet. Who's to say if they are wrong or right?

The Forbidden edition by Felicia Carparelli Literature Fiction eBooks

Jessica and Jimmy were in love
True to one another. True as the stars above.
But Jimmy and Jessica found loving kinda tough
When she's 35 and he's 14, things get a bit rough.

In a surprising and unpredictable riff on Romeo and Juliet, Felicia Carparelli's new novel makes for uneasy reading at times and at other times the near poetical dialog coming out of an eighth grader's mouth makes a reader race along at a frantic clip enjoying every danger-packed moment.
It's not unlike sitting on a hill out in the countryside along the railroad's main line watching speeding locomotives converge at breakneck speed. This ain't gonna end well. Or is it?
While "The Forbidden" makes one wince at times it's a pretty sexy read as well. Shame on me., Shame on Ms Carparelli. Shame on all of us whose fate is to skirt the dangerous line between romance and reason. The narrative raises profound questions about issues like child abuse along with the impossibly wretched conditions in urban poverty pockets and the schools that fail those who are supposed to be taught right along with those who are supposed to teach them.
The love scenes, of which there are a goodly number, get told in such a way that you never forget the great harm that this sad, star-crossed woman named Jessica Reynolds afflicts on 14-year-old Jimmy Sanders, a white child living on the small boundary between Chicago's affluent North side and the nightmare territory of Hispanic street gangs just a couple of streets to the West.
Gangbangers called the Anacondas, with the street colors of the Mexican flag fill the role of the feuding Capulets in this particular Romeo and Juliet saga. As the action starts, the Anacondas kill Jimmy's close friend and let it be known that the eighth grader is next on the hit list. Jimmy finds this dead friend, Wayne, wrapped in plastic and beaten into a watermelon pulp. Thereafter Jimmy rides his little bicycle around the streets of Albany Park in constant terror. And horny.
Beautiful, blond and loving, Jessica lives with a homicidally abusive husband mad for kinky sex involving whips for him and dog collars for her and the comfort she and fellow lost soul Jimmy Sanders find while locked in each others' arms drive this fast paced, startling and unpredictable tale ripped out of the tabloids. More teachers take off with very very young lovers than you might think. Most recently, Alexandria Vera was arrested after she fled with a 13-year-old lad who had impregnated her. To see how common this tragedy really is just Google "teacher flees with student."
It's a legitimate topic albeit pretty radioactive and it comes alive in all its squalid splendor in this tabloid take on Shakespeare's Classic tale of star-crossed lovers.
"The Forbidden" is all but unforgettable.

Carparelli engages the reader in what could be a simple "ripped from the headlines" plot by developing the characters, especially Jimmy, into people we want to see succeed despite the uncomfortable subject matter. Despite poor judgement on many of these characters part, you still want to root for their happiness.
